My problem with Malzahn was that he was being hired straight out of high school to be an offensive coordinator in the SEC. If they had hired him as quarterbacks coach, I would have ignored the hire. Not only was he hired to be OC, which was forced on the head coach, who like calling his own plays and honestly did and does a pretty good job at it, these Springdale people acted like the keys to the program were supposed to be handed over to them. I don't like the pedestal NWA put Malzahn on or the way he responded. His first game was a total flop. Then, whenever something good happened, he was a genius, and whenever something bad happened, it was "Why doesn't Nutt let Malzahn call the plays?" That is madness.
That said, I'm happy for his success at Tulsa, which I might add plays in a conference that is not at the same level as SEC competition. If he wants it, I have no doubt he will get the opportunity to be a head coach somewhere. Tennessee would be interesting.
