From the Bench bonus edition:

South Carolina - I said all week if this game was on the pick list then I would go with the home team. When AJ Green was suspended, it changed my outlook for a minute. This is the toughest game to pick on the list. My instinct says go with Georgia because of the Green suspension everyone will go with the Cocks and it's often best to go the other way when everyone thinks it's a lock. But I will stay with my firs thought and go with the home team.

Notre Dame - The ND defense looks better than years past, but wow it's slow. The deciding factor is if Michigan can get the little QB rolling. I don't think so.

Miami - This is my loser pick going against the vest in the horse shoe. Ohio State always has a great defense. What I can't get out of my head is that a really bad USC team with a true freshman starting went into the Shoe and won. The place is not as tough as people think. I also like Jacory Harris and those Florida teams seem to do well when the visit the Big 10.

Oklahoma - Going with history on this one. Plus how can you pull against a QB with a porn moustache?

Alabama - It will be close as Alabama usually plays everyone close and just relies on their defense. I think the freshman Penn State QB will have problems against that defense.

Hello from Big O:

After such stunning success picking winners based upon my limited research abilities (Ha), I am nevertheless encouraged to continue to do so -- at least for a second week. First lesson learned, however, don't really expect the Big East (UConn) or the Big 10 (Purdue) to meet the recognized pundits' expectations, at least in football. Indeed, I note that many of the lofty prognosticators -- including SI and the B'ham News/other Alabama writers -- have chosen the MSU Bulldogs over our beloved Tigers because they did so well against an inept Memphis State eleven (note, I didn't call them football players because they were truly that bad) while seemingly ignoring Florida's really awful offensive performance last week. I nevertheless have at least weighed their selections before making the following choices for this week: 1) South Carolina (because they actually looked like an upper echelon SEC team winning last week and, moreover, they do have a home field advantage at their stadium as their fans are indeed loyal and vocal in a sportsman like way -- based upon Lee and my viewing of our game there years ago); 2) Michigan (because, again, their performance last Saturday impressed me more than ND, even if they have their home crowd advantage); 3) Miami (because I fully expect Ohio State, even at home, to stub their toe once or twice this year and Miami is good enough to do it); 4) Oklahoma (as our resident FSU player-of-old admits, OU doesn't lose at home); and 5) Penn State (because the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa doesn't have an experienced defense, especially secondary, and JoePa will have them primed to beat last year's National Champs (although really stupid for SI, et al, to go along with their claim of 13 championships). Well one last task out of the way in time to get my game face -- and all orange get up -- on for tonight's inter-SEC slugfest... War Damn Eagle! War Cam Eagle! Hell, War Michael Eagle!!!

Thanks for the shout out. I'm still trying to live in my glory days. -- Drumline Cory

Too much thought went into these picks... I feel a 1-4 in my future! -- Parkerman

Jeff Go's weekly breakdown:

Damn VTech's 2-minute drill preparations. They really blew it on both sides of the ball Monday night. BSU looked good, but votes for Number 1? Give me a break. This week allows me to hate on ND - thanks.

USC - UGa has let me down many times. This might be a hell of a game.

Michigan - recall my hating on ND from previous posts. I'm nothing if not consistent. I mean it - that's all I have to offer.

OSU - I would be tempted to take Miami with the points.

OU - not sure about either of these teams, so I'm going with the homers - again. Consistency - see above.

'Bama - Trent Richards is better than Ingram.

-

Ugh! Michigan stopped me from going 5-0. I guess I was just still remembering 2007. -- T-Mac

1-4 to start -- nowhere to go but up (or 0-5) let's see what happens now... Niagara the physic wonder dog is on stand by... Miami - Ohio State: This is causing me actual pain - Winner = Ohio State. Penn State - Alabama: Gameday is coming to the Hill - Winner = Alabama. -- David M.

Wow... throwing the upset points in this early... clearly seperating the men from the boys... well I'll man up for one bonus point game, but I didn't get to be middle middle class by taking too many risks! Now I take no great personal pride in picking Alabama, over my beloved Nittany Lions... but their fist quarter stumbling with Youngstown St. (albeit 4 1-A national champs), gives me great pause over the frosh at the reigns. I will gladly forfeit the point if PSU can pull off a miracle. For the record, I am not an alumni. I went to University of Dayton, but married into an entire family of psu alums and by default became a rabid lions football fan, especially since the Flyers are unlikely to make it to Poolsville anytime soon! -- Bizzy G

Okay, 5-0... Take 2. Action! -- Alex Player

Notre Dame (part of the job description), Florida State (I'd rather lose than pick Oklahoma) -- Steve S.

Ok, hopefully I will do better this week than last week... If not you and John can make up a top ten list of things not to say to me b/c I will not be happy!!! -- Lauren C.

Check is written and will be in the mail tomorrow. Now that I have paid, I will not have another 5-0 week all season! -- Brian R.

Dailey and I have already reveled together in our early success. Now to keep it going... -- Wuje

I am going for losing all games and coming in last so I can get whatever you get when you come in last at the end. -- 0-5 Eileen

Hey, Brett and I have always been competitors, ever since we assembled a team of soccer players for Hoopfest 1990 under the name "The 40-ounce Posse." I think we went 0 and 3 that summer, but i did make a 35-foot 3 pointer that made the other team laugh aloud. At least Wuje should be pleased with my ND pick. -- Jeff D.

The mysterious HogTattoo says:

Notre Dame - It's not yet time for the Catholics' hearts to be broken.

Ohio State - Miami only wins if Luther Campbell starts paying players again. Luke's twitter feed is not nearly as entertaining as his old raps. I'd donate a large sum of money if the UA band broke into a 2 Live Crew song during a halftime show.

Oklahoma — Unless, of course, Chief Osceola stabs the Sooner Schooner's horses.

Alabama — Spotting a houndstooth cap in the stands, Joe Pa wanders over to the student section to shake hands with Bear Bryant.Nick Saban uses the distraction to make a deal with Satan for another national championship.

-

Ugh. I pretty much hate it when Georgia is in the pool. Especially on the day the NCAA yanks our best player for four games. That being said... um, Go Dawgs! -- Hilary D.

South Carolina - Take that Demillo! -- Amy S.

OK, I have given everyone a one week head start, thanks to my 3 last second losses (well, 1 was an OT loss), no worries for me though, I am all in now... -- Jeff K.

Project Playoffs:
Week 1 standings and seedings

There is only one solution to the Boise State debate -- put the Broncos in a conference! Until then, both sides of the debate will have merit. Those who say Boise State doesn't play a schedule that is worthy of being considered for the national championship will be correct, and those who say Boise State does nothing but win and deserves to be there will also have a point.

According to Project Playoff's realigned conferences, Boise State would have an in-conference schedule that includes Oregon, Utah, BYU, Oregon State, Fresno State, Air Force, Washington, and Washington State -- a legitimate schedule that completed unbeaten would give them a shot at winning it all. Even better, according to our plan Boise State would get to settle the postseason on the field with 15 other teams.

The Big Ten and Pac 10 also have it all wrong. Conferences shouldn't be getting bigger -- they should be getting smaller. We are going in the wrong direction, people. Any conference that is so big all its members can't play each other cannot produce a legitimate conference champion. The schedule is nothing but an exhibition for the big TV payout at the end. These university presidents and athletic directors can't smell past the mountain of green they are already getting to see that this plan could actually make more money (at least for the 81 schools that make the cut).

And BYU, come on, man. Throwing another independent into the mix that can create its own schedule just adds one more point of controversy a la Boise State. Instead, the great people at BYU have gone for the greater good -- of their individual TV contract. The system simply cannot work with teams playing mostly on their own island, whether that means BYU, Boise State, or yes, Notre Dame.

Here are the Week 1 standings in realigned conferences with seedings for a 16-team playoff. Seedings are derived from the Massey Comparison Rankings, which take every poll and computer rating into account. There is no reason to consider the BCS rankings as the ultimate authority for determining the top 16.

First-round match-ups:
16 USC at 1 Alabama
15 Georgia at 2 Boise State
14 Wisconsin at 3 Ohio State
13 Iowa at 4 TCU
12 Penn State at 5 Florida
11 Oklahoma at 6 Oregon
10 LSU at 7 Texas
9 Virginia Tech at 8 Nebraska

Shot heard around the world

Last week's Ole Miss loss was the shot heard around the world. So this week I'm composing it with a haiku:
Trouble in Oxford
Houston is in deep doo-doo
Jack Crowe gets revenge.

College football's best five games of Week 2

It's Week 2, time to see who takes an early advantage in the storied Dailey-Wujek rivalry, which currently finds itself atop the standings in the 5-0 category. Wujek, a Notre Dame graduate, surely already has "Wake Up the Echos" scrolling across as his computer's screensaver like so many other Irish fans in the pool, which is quite a contrast from the "Fire Rich Rodriguez" message Michigan fans had prior to last week's victory over UConn. Bonus points could be flying if any of these teams come through for the upset.

Georgia - South Carolina

The perfect song for college bands to play when the opposing team gets a penalty

Ramon's Escoblog: Week 1

Survey says: One more for the good guys... What a game last night to start off the season. The result gave nine people a 5-0 for the week and a chall-enge to every upcoming Monday Night Football game in the NFL. Because there won't be one better than that... If I were the editor of the Flavor Flav News, there would be only one headline for the sports section today: "Yeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhh, Boise!"... Special shout out to the Broncos for breaking out the commemorative Good Counsel Gophers throwback uniforms... Nothing against one of the great voices of college football, Brent Musburger, but what I would have given to hear that game-winning touchdown get the trademark call from Joey Styles... Bruce James was right. Any kid who chooses a school because of the uniform probably can't play football. But on the bright side for Virginia Tech, at least the players know they already have their Halloween costumes ready... The last time I saw a confrontation like the one in the stands last week at the U.S. Open, it was after I gave the guy in the Texas hat the downward Hook 'em Horns sign in 1997... Big week for Mike B. Not only is he tied for first in the standings, but he also made No. 1 on the top six list in High Profile and is "No. 2" to his boss... Thanks to Old No. 18 for hooking me up with the indoor club seats at Razorback Stadium so I could see how many people in that section break out the iPhones when the game gets boring (est. 65 percent). Maybe Jeff Long needs a new campaign called "Not Answering the Call During the Game"... Next up: Monster Saturday!
