Project Playoffs:
Week 1 standings and seedings

There is only one solution to the Boise State debate -- put the Broncos in a conference! Until then, both sides of the debate will have merit. Those who say Boise State doesn't play a schedule that is worthy of being considered for the national championship will be correct, and those who say Boise State does nothing but win and deserves to be there will also have a point.

According to Project Playoff's realigned conferences, Boise State would have an in-conference schedule that includes Oregon, Utah, BYU, Oregon State, Fresno State, Air Force, Washington, and Washington State -- a legitimate schedule that completed unbeaten would give them a shot at winning it all. Even better, according to our plan Boise State would get to settle the postseason on the field with 15 other teams.

The Big Ten and Pac 10 also have it all wrong. Conferences shouldn't be getting bigger -- they should be getting smaller. We are going in the wrong direction, people. Any conference that is so big all its members can't play each other cannot produce a legitimate conference champion. The schedule is nothing but an exhibition for the big TV payout at the end. These university presidents and athletic directors can't smell past the mountain of green they are already getting to see that this plan could actually make more money (at least for the 81 schools that make the cut).

And BYU, come on, man. Throwing another independent into the mix that can create its own schedule just adds one more point of controversy a la Boise State. Instead, the great people at BYU have gone for the greater good -- of their individual TV contract. The system simply cannot work with teams playing mostly on their own island, whether that means BYU, Boise State, or yes, Notre Dame.

Here are the Week 1 standings in realigned conferences with seedings for a 16-team playoff. Seedings are derived from the Massey Comparison Rankings, which take every poll and computer rating into account. There is no reason to consider the BCS rankings as the ultimate authority for determining the top 16.

First-round match-ups:
16 USC at 1 Alabama

14 Wisconsin at 3 Ohio State
13 Iowa at 4 TCU
12 Penn State at 5 Florida
11 Oklahoma at 6 Oregon
